The First Year contest was one of the easiest contests which could be why it was the most difficult. It puts a twist on Veterans Day by looking forward instead of backward. The entries could have been almost any subject as long as they include anything that might happen within one year from active duty separation. The idea is that veterans want acceptance and to be assimilated back into the society that they were charged with serving. They want to put the military behind themselves, and accomplish their dreams. Putting aside the title of the photographed sculpture (The Roughnecks)and its immediate purpose, it may be used as an illustration of the hard work and effort that lies ahead with working a job, providing for oneself and family, and having a goal. Congratulations to Julie Smith, Flying Fish Foto, for being judged and awarded First Place.

Congratulations to Michael Durst, Donna Tucker, and Sheila Diemert in the latest contest *People at Work." This is the most competitive contest so far that has been sponsored by the Survivors Group on Fine Art America. The winning entries show great artistic skill, but more than that they show the dignity of doing humble tasks.

A full size duplicate of the pencil drawing "G.I. Boots 4 Months Later" can be viewed at James Shoe Repair in Irvine CA. The original is not for sale. The drawing is significant due to a number of larger drawings matching the small drawing which were sold on commission from 1969 to 1971. The orginal drawing was completed in 1969, and just as an emotional release - having to put-up with circumstances. There were quickly additional sales of other work.
Also James Shoe Repair is a maker of Custom Made Shoes. The address is 17655 Harvard Ave., Suite C, Irvine CA.
