The First Year contest was one of the easiest contests which could be why it was the most difficult. It puts a twist on Veterans Day by looking forward instead of backward. The entries could have been almost any subject as long as they include anything that might happen within one year from active duty separation. The idea is that veterans want acceptance and to be assimilated back into the society that they were charged with serving. They want to put the military behind themselves, and accomplish their dreams. Putting aside the title of the photographed sculpture (The Roughnecks)and its immediate purpose, it may be used as an illustration of the hard work and effort that lies ahead with working a job, providing for oneself and family, and having a goal. Congratulations to Julie Smith, Flying Fish Foto, for being judged and awarded First Place.
